  • The LandPKS App Provides Soil Insights for Better Land Management

    Several years ago, a group of USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists saw great potential for apps in agriculture. Their foresight led them to develop “LandPKS,” an app that allows users anywhere in the world to access, collect, store, interpret and, if they wish, share soil, vegetation cover, and management data via a smart phone or tablet. The goal of LandPKS is to provide global access to knowledge for sustainable land management. Short for Land-Potential Knowledge System, LandPKS has four input modules that can be used individually or together to customize the app to the user's needs: LandInfo LandManagement LandCover SoilHealth Using GPS for pinpoint location, LandPKS allows access to vast amounts of existing, open-source data on soil, ecology, climate, and more. Much of the U.S. data is from ARS and USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and each time users input data on their own soils, the app's soil identification accuracy improves. Teachers are also using a curriculum unit based on the app that aligns with Next Generation Science Standards used by many states by promoting an understanding of how soils and topography determine the land's potential to support crop production.     The National Science Foundation's Center on Pervasive Personalized Intelligence for IoT Systems is scaling up their partnerships between industry, government labs, and universities with an event on June 15 - 17, 2021. The PPI Center is a multi-university partnership between the University of Colorado Boulder, Oregon State University, and several industry members. The industry-focused research center operates under the supervision of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) using the Industry-University Cooperative Research Centers model. It supports the next big growth in Internet of Things (IoT) systems that push Pervasive Personalized Intelligence (PPI) to the edge of the network, where latency is critical, and mobility, privacy, and context awareness are essential qualities to enable an entirely new class of applications with intelligence that is predictive instead of reactive.

  • Nominations sought: National Medal of Technology and Innovation

    The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is seeking nominations for the 2021 National Medal of Technology and Innovation (NMTI). The NMTI is the nation’s highest honor for technological achievement and is presented to recipients by the President of the United States at a White House ceremony. “By highlighting the national importance of technological innovation, this medal is meant to inspire future generations to prepare for and pursue technical careers to keep America at the forefront of global technology and economic leadership,” said Drew Hirshfeld, performing the functions and duties of the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO. “The USPTO is honored to help celebrate the best minds in American innovation whose creations have improved our world.” The medal is awarded to individuals, teams (up to four individuals), and companies or divisions of companies for their outstanding contributions to the nation’s economic, environmental, and social well-being through the development and commercialization of technological products, processes and concepts, technological innovation, and strengthening the nation’s technological workforce. Anyone can nominate for the NMTI by submitting the online nomination form and letters of support. Applicants must submit all nominations by 11:59 p.m. ET, July 30, 2021.   • CU Boulder launches PHAST accelerator for COVID-19 innovations

    Over the last year, CU Boulder scientists and engineers have developed solutions that address various challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including diagnostics, environmental sensors, supply chain innovations and more. These technologies require entrepreneurial support and acceleration to rapidly be brought to market and address the urgent needs related to the pandemic. Venture Partners at CU Boulder—the university's commercialization arm—has launched the Pandemic Hyper Accelerator for Science and Technology (PHAST) to support the translation of these CU-developed, COVID-19 innovations into new businesses. “There is no shortage of good ideas on campus. What often differentiates ideas and impact, though, is the translation and practical application of those ideas,” said Bryn Rees, CU Boulder assistant vice chancellor for research and innovation and managing director of Venture Partners. "That’s the goal of PHAST. We're bringing together leading technologists, entrepreneurs and startup resources along the Colorado Front Range to take COVID-19 solutions out of the lab and into the field." Participants receive entrepreneurial training, funding and mentorship from seasoned Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, altogether worth over $75,000. PHAST also culminates in a Demo Day, which provides a chance for angel investors, venture capitalists and the startup community to see pitches and discuss deal opportunities. Crucial to PHAST's programming is the partnership formed with local angel investing group Rockies Venture Club (RVC), as the program requires participants to complete RVC's 1-week HyperAccelerator.
